Shubman Gill, once regarded as Kolkata Knight Riders‘ (KKR) most promising young player, is expected to join the new Ahmedabad club for the IPL 2022 season. According to rumors, he would form the franchise’s nucleus alongside all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Afghan spin prodigy Rashid Khan ahead of the major auction.
Gill’s inclusion in the squad is the most recent news since various reports have previously verified Pandya and Rashid’s involvement with the club. Pandya is expected to be chosen captain of the franchise. Here are 5 reasons why Shubman Gill could fail for Ahmedabad –
1. Poor form
Shubman Gill was poor in IPL 2021. He was unable to live up to his expectations last season due to a decline in his strike rate, and he also failed to convert promising starts into a large score. If he doesn’t recover his form soon, he could struggle in IPL 2022.
2. New team
Gill made his IPL debut in 2018 and remained with the same franchise till last season. KKR first utilized Gill as a middle-order batsman since Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine were doing so well at the top. In his debut season, he played a variety of positions but made his presence known. Changing the team means Gill will have to settle very quickly and if he doesn’t, he will be under a lot of pressure.
Gill has been struggling with injuries over the past few months. To have a successful IPL 2022, Gill will have to remain fully fit otherwise his poor form will surely continue. Injuries have been a major problem for Gill recently.
4. Not sure to start
Gill was comfortable in KKR and was sure to open the innings every match. It is possible that in his new team, he doesn’t start games. He could become a substitute player which will put him under a lot of pressure.
5. Ahmedabad could struggle
Ahmedabad might struggle and have a dismal start. The IPL is a very competitive competition, and the new franchise will struggle to cope with the pressure. The entire squad may struggle, making things difficult for Shubman Gill.
