”I clearly remember” – Virat Kohli on The Moment AB de Villiers Told Him About Retirement

In many respects, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 marks the start of a new era. Many prominent names have been missing from the competition, despite the fact that numerous clubs had to let go of many of their important players owing to the IPL 2022 auction. AB de Villiers, who was one of the pillars of Virat Kohli‘s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) club over the years, is arguably the most important of them all. Before the 15th edition of the IPL, the great South African cricketer announced his retirement.

Kohli, who stepped down as RCB captain ahead of the IPL 2022, recalls receiving a voice message from De Villiers following the T20 World Cup, informing him of his decision to retire from the IPL.

Virat Kohli on the retirement of AB de Villiers

Kohli remembered the moment he received the voice note from AB de Villiers in an interview with RCB, which was shared on their official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

“It is very strange, I mean. I clearly remember when he decided to finally call it a day, he sent me a voice note. And, I still remember we were coming back from Dubai after the World Cup, and I got this voice note, and we were driving back home. I got the voice note, I opened it and listened to it. Anushka was with me and I looked at her like this. The first thing she said was, don’t tell me. She knew,” Kohli said.

With each successive season, de Villiers and Kohli’s friendship became stronger, with the two modern-day greats exchanging mutual respect and appreciation on countless occasions.

Kohli stated that he sensed something was up last season and avoided seeing de Villiers anytime the latter expressed an interest in a coffee and a talk.

“I kind of had the impression and was guessing it in the last IPL. Our rooms were next to each other, and we would walk the same way and disperse, every time we walked to our room and he would see me outside, he would be like ‘I want to see you for coffee, one of these days. I kept getting nervous and was like ‘I am not sitting with you because I think there is something coming’ to which he always said ‘No man there is nothing, I just want to have a chat with you, it’s been a while and he never speaks like that because we interact all the time. So, I knew something is brewing up. It is a very strange feeling I got very emotional. The voice note was very emotional as well for me when he said, ‘Look I don’t have it in me anymore. I have shared so many moments with him, highs and lows, everything we have been through he was right next to me,” Kohli added.
