WWE Makes Bold Move After Almost Two Decades

Two WWE stars have just done something really extraordinary that hasn’t happened in the industry in nearly 20 years.

Last week on SmackDown, Rey Mysterio surprised everyone by taking the place of the injured Santos Escobar. He beat Austin Theory and became the United States Champion for the third time in his wrestling career.

But, Rey’s family has another champion in WWE right now. His son, Dominik Mysterio, won his first title all by himself last month. He beat Wes Lee and became the NXT North American Champion.

The father and son winning titles is a special thing that hasn’t happened in the company for a while. About 20 years ago was the last time when two Mexican stars were champions at the same time. Back then, Rey Mysterio held the Cruiserweight Championship while Eddie Guerrero had the WWE Championship in 2004.

Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero wrestled many times when they were in WWE. Right now, Rey and his son Dominik had just one match at WrestleMania 39. Maybe they’ll have another match to bring their titles together.

Dutch Mantell thinks Rey Mysterio could lose his title

Last week, when Rey Mysterio became the United States Champion, he stopped Austin Theory from being the champion for 258 days. A lot of fans thought Theory’s time as champion had become boring. A wrestling legend named Dutch Mantell said the same thing, and he thinks it will help the 26-year-old wrestler have a fresh start.

But, Mantell said on Smack Talk that the company might shock fans by doing something different and making the former champion win the belt again.

“Hey, I liked it! I’m looking at Theory, and Theory is kind of dying right now. So beat him and then start something new with him. So, now he and Rey will go back and forth, and he can retake it. Then you’ve got to work Santos back into it. See, what WWE is doing now, we look at it like it’s full. But they are going against the grain. They are doing the stuff you don’t expect. And not all of it will work. This is not an exact science,” he said.
